A name given to the resource
Naval Submarine Base New London
Description
An account of the resource
New London became the location of the first United States Navy Submarine Base on October 18, 1915, when America entered World War I after the sinking of the Lusitania, resulting in the death of 128 Americans. New London’s Navy Yard was transformed into a submarine base, playing a critical role in the United States’ military endeavors. After the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 ushered the US into the Second World War, the Sub Base was expanded by 300 acres, the largest expansion of all submarine bases across the nation. The Naval Submarine Medical Research Laboratory (NSMRL), which is still in operation today, was founded in 1942 at the Base to study sonar, night vision, and diving solutions for the front.

An account of the resource
This photo depicts the USS Seawolf (SSN 575)—the second nuclear submarine created by Electric Boat Co. (General Dynamics). Its general design was modeled on the USS Nautilus, but the Seawolf propulsion system was more technically advanced, and it is the only submarine to be built with a liquid metal cooled nuclear reactor. The USS Seawolf was launched on July 21, 1955, and was decommissioned in 1987.

Title
A name given to the resource
United States Coast Guard Academy
Description
An account of the resource
Established in 1790, the Coast Guard is the first "seagoing" military force in the country. Its Academy was founded in 1910 at Fort Trumbull as cadets sailed the tall ship Itasca to this quiet seaside town. The City of New London donated the land for its current site to the US Government in 1932. Additionally, the Allyn and Payne estates of New London contributed funds to build facilities. The Academy offers nine different programs of study, ranging from Civil and Mechanical Engineering to Naval Architecture and Government. In 1966, the school admitted its first African American cadet, with the declaration of full racial integration. Ten years later, the Academy opened its doors to women, and in 1980, admitted the first international cadet. Although it is the smallest of all the military academies, with about 1000 cadets, its commitment to our national safety is second to none. The school’s motto, “the sea yields to knowledge,” is a fitting tribute to New London as a “city on the sea”.

A name given to the resource
Cadet Color Guard, Coast Guard Academy, New London, Conn.
Description
An account of the resource
IIn 1932, citizens of New London donated land to the US Treasury to move the Coast Guard Academy from its original location at Fort Trumbull to its present site. This postcard depicts cadets in a uniform procession, most likely, a “Regimental Review.” This event, one of the oldest traditions at the Academy, takes place about six times a year in order to teach cadets critical qualities: confidence, leadership, and poise.

Title
A name given to the resource
Future National Coast Guard Museum
Description
An account of the resource
Although there is an existing museum dedicated to the history and legacy of the Coast Guard Academy at the school itself, the Coast Guard is the only branch of the military without an official national museum. As the current museum’s mission is to “Honor, Engage, Educate, and Inspire Generations,” the future institution hopes to expand the awareness of the scope and honorable dedication of Coast Guard missions. Planned by the National Coast Guard Museum Association, Inc. to reside along the banks of the Thames River in downtown New London, the Future Coast Guard Museum has the potential to embody a cultural and economic shift for the city of New London. Hoping to connect and revitalize New London under a common theme of past and present military service, the Future Museum strongly believes in this site. Due to the location of the Academy and the Coast Guard Base at Fort Trumbull, there is nowhere better than New London to display the history and continuing role of the Coast Guard.

Title
A name given to the resource
Fort Trumbull
Description
An account of the resource
New London’s geography as a deep-water harbor has shaped its maritime commercial and military history. Already in the late 18th century, the city was an important port of entry, and a defense fort was built on Mamacock. In the fervor and chaos of the American Revolution, New London was a major target for the British as a gateway city and privateering hub known for its wealth and patriotism. The small defense site on the Thames River was deemed inadequate protection against possible British invasion. By 1777, the renovated and expanded fortifications were renamed Fort Trumbull. The site was turned into a Connecticut State park in 2002. The historic structure and museum features reconstructions of the fort’s 19th century living quarters and a 1950s research laboratory.

A name given to the resource
Fort Trumbull Coast Guard Base, New London, Conn.
Description
An account of the resource
In 1910, U.S. Coast Guard Academy Cadets sailed the Itasca (a tall ship similar to the ones seen in this postcard) to Fort Trumbull, claiming it for the Academy. When the school moved in 1932, Fort Trumbull became the official U.S. Coast Guard Station. Today, the base remains in the same location—a reminder of New London’s key role in the national security and maritime safety of our nation.
