The Connecticut 12th Volunteer Infantry in Louisiana

The Connecticut 12th Infantry Regiment was organized in fall 1861 and shipped to the Gulf of Mexico in the winter of 1862.  During their time in Louisiana, the regiment was mostly encamped in and around New Orleans with minor operations in the region southwest of the city, occasionally venturing up to Alexandria. Although combat rarely took much of a toll on the regiment, the harsh climate frequently did. Approximately three times as many men died of disease as of injuries and stories of malaria in the unit recur throughout the letters.
