Coast Play and Profit

original research conducted by Fiona Ocain

Ocean Beach has been central to recreation for both New London residents and tourists since the city’s founding. The appearance of the area has fluctuated greatly as New London’s economic situation rose and fell overtime. A hurricane in 1938 allowed for the Park’s expansion and redevelopment of the surrounding residential area. At this time the Gam Building and Clock Tower, two integral buildings were constructed. Over the course of it’s history many architecturally distinct structures have inhabited the shoreline. Currently the group “Save Ocean Beach” is fundraising for overall renovations of the buildings.
