The Mohican Hotel was originally constructed in 1896 as the Munsey Building for Frank A. Munsey, publisher of the weekly Munsey's Magazine. The magazine operated out of the top six floors, while the bottom two were used for stores and shops. Following the closure of the magazine a few months later, the building was occupied as a hotel. For a brief period, Mohican Dry Goods, a department store, occupied the structure. However, the hotel regained occupancy until the 1980s, when it was converted to an elderly housing apartment building.
